Two Rounds of Talks, Zero Breakthroughs: The State of US-Iran Negotiations

by admin477351

Despite two rounds of nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran this month, President Trump’s State of the Union Address made clear that a breakthrough remains elusive. The central obstacle, Trump said, is Iran’s refusal to make the one commitment Washington requires: a public, categorical declaration that it will never build a nuclear weapon.

Trump confirmed that Iran is interested in reaching a deal and that the US is willing to engage. But he said the foundational element of any agreement — an unambiguous Iranian commitment to non-nuclear status — has not been offered. He called this the “secret words” that would unlock a diplomatic resolution.

The President added context by referencing last year’s Operation Midnight Hammer, the US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. He said the strikes had disrupted Iran’s program but that Tehran has since begun rebuilding. He expressed frustration that Iran was explicitly warned not to do so and chose to ignore that warning.

Trump also described an advancing missile threat, with Iranian weapons already able to reach Europe and US bases abroad, and longer-range rockets in development that could target American cities. He said these capabilities add urgency to the negotiations and contribute to the US military buildup in the Gulf region.

His overall assessment was guarded: a deal is possible, but not on current terms. Iran needs to make a commitment it has so far been unwilling to make. Whether the combination of diplomatic pressure and military positioning can push Tehran to that decision remains the central question.
