Verbruggen Heroics Earn Brighton Point at Manchester City

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen emerged as the hero on Wednesday night, making crucial saves to help his team secure a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The result continues City’s disappointing run of form, with three consecutive league draws leaving them five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Manchester City opened the scoring four minutes before halftime when Erling Haaland converted a penalty after Jeremy Doku was brought down by Diego Gomez. Following a VAR review that confirmed the referee’s decision, Haaland stepped up to score his 150th goal for the club and his 20th in the Premier League this season, ending a three-match period without a goal.

The home side nearly doubled their advantage early in the second half when Bernardo Silva pounced on a Brighton mistake, but his shot struck the post. The match saw tensions rise when City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper were involved in a confrontation, with both goalkeepers receiving yellow cards.

Brighton restored parity on the hour mark through Kaoru Mitoma, who demonstrated excellent composure to guide a low shot into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area. The Japanese winger collected a pass from wide and took his time to pick his spot, beating Donnarumma with a precisely placed effort that sparked Brighton into life.

After equalising, Brighton seized control and nearly claimed a remarkable victory when Mitoma’s angled effort struck the post. The decisive moment came in the dying minutes when Haaland found himself alone in the box with only Verbruggen to beat, but the Dutch goalkeeper produced a stunning save to deny the Norwegian striker and secure a valuable point for Brighton in their battle for European qualification.
