Egypt Restricts Military Aid to Saudi Arabia to Defensive Actions Only

by admin477351

In a move that underscores regional security concerns, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has declared that any military support Egypt might extend to Saudi Arabia will be strictly defensive. El-Sisi emphasized that Egypt’s involvement would not include offensive operations, particularly against Yemen, where conflict has been ongoing.

This announcement comes as Egypt evaluates a proposal that would allow the president to authorize defensive military assistance to Saudi Arabia. Discussions in the Egyptian parliament regarding this measure have been postponed until October 26. Under Egypt’s constitutional guidelines, the deployment of Egyptian armed forces in overseas combat missions requires both consultation with the National Defense Council and a two-thirds majority approval from parliament.

El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s stance that the security of Arab nations, especially the Gulf states, is closely linked to Egypt’s own national interests. He highlighted the principles of noninterference in the internal affairs of other countries, the protection of national institutions, and opposition to armed militias.

This development occurs amid rising concerns over regional security, following intensified missile and drone attacks by the Houthi movement targeting Saudi Arabia. These escalating tensions have also raised alarms about maritime safety in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical passage for global shipping.

In a related statement, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty noted that Cairo is working with Red Sea nations to enhance regional security through economic development, logistical coordination, and strengthened partnerships.

Egypt’s position reflects a balanced approach aimed at supporting Saudi Arabia’s security needs while steering clear of direct involvement in offensive military engagements in Yemen. This stance aligns with broader efforts to maintain stability and security in the region without deepening military conflicts.
