Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have taken a significant step toward enhancing regional connectivity by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost cooperation in electricity interconnection and rail transport. The agreement, formalized by Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman and UAE Investment Minister Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, aims to improve infrastructure integration, increase energy efficiency, and facilitate cross-border trade between the two nations.
The MoU outlines plans for cooperation in several key areas, including electricity grid interconnection, electricity exchange, and sales. This initiative is expected to lead to greater energy-system efficiency and strengthen electricity cooperation not only between Saudi Arabia and the UAE but also among other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states. By coordinating efforts, the countries aim to expand the regional electricity interconnection network, supporting broader integration across the Gulf region.
In addition to the energy sector, the agreement establishes a framework for developing rail connectivity between Saudi Arabia and the UAE. This includes principles for the transportation and transit of goods and freight in both directions. The proposed rail cooperation is anticipated to improve logistics networks, enhance supply-chain efficiency, and facilitate cross-border cargo movement.
Through these initiatives, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are focusing on strengthening transport and energy links to support economic development and expand regional trade. By deepening cooperation across the Gulf, the two countries aim to create mutual economic benefits and contribute to the overall growth of the region.
