In the first half of 2025, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has emerged as a pivotal player in clinical research, conducting nearly half of all clinical trials registered in the country. This achievement underscores the hospital’s expanding role in healthcare advancement and clinical study development. The clinical research at KFSH is supported by a dedicated team of professionals, including investigators, research nurses, pharmacists, coordinators, and data specialists, alongside regulatory and ethics teams. These experts ensure the seamless transition of clinical studies from scientific planning to patient recruitment, trial execution, safety monitoring, and data management.

KFSH introduced its centralized Clinical Trials service in 2020, aiming to streamline research efforts by its clinicians and investigators. This service supports various aspects of clinical trials, such as feasibility assessments, study initiation, trial operations, patient recruitment, investigational medicine handling, data quality assurance, and adherence to safety, regulatory, and ethical standards. The first half of 2025 saw KFSH actively managing 104 clinical trials, with 80 new studies initiated. These research efforts span diverse medical fields, including oncology, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune and musculoskeletal disorders, dermatology, gastroenterology, liver disease, and endocrine and metabolic conditions. This array of studies offers patients with complex health issues access to cutting-edge treatment options while providing critical clinical evidence pertinent to Saudi Arabia’s healthcare landscape.

A significant advancement in KFSH’s research endeavors is the initiation of a Phase I clinical trial utilizing genetically engineered CAR-T cells, locally manufactured for treating relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This trial marks a milestone in integrating local scientific expertise, advanced biomanufacturing, and specialized clinical care into a cohesive research process, paving the way for innovative treatment approaches.

KFSH’s robust clinical-trial infrastructure not only bolsters its national research capabilities but also enhances its participation in intricate international studies. By upholding high standards in research governance, patient safety, ethics, data quality, and regulatory compliance, KFSH provides a solid foundation for collaborating with multinational research entities. The hospital will showcase its innovative approach to clinical research and healthcare at the upcoming C3 US NYC Davos of Healthcare Summit 2026 in New York City on September 14.

Globally recognized among leading academic medical centers, KFSH has earned accolades for its healthcare brand and has been featured in international hospital rankings. Its contributions to clinical research and healthcare development continue to position it as a leader in the Middle East and beyond.
