Saudi Arabia has expressed its appreciation for a United Nations Security Council statement that condemns recent Houthi attacks against the Kingdom. The statement reaffirms Saudi Arabia’s right under international law to defend its territory, citizens, and residents. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledged the Security Council’s solidarity and its condemnation of attacks targeting civilians, airports, and critical infrastructure, as well as threats to maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait.
The Security Council specifically condemned attacks on King Khalid International Airport that occurred on October 10 and 11, which reportedly resulted in deaths and injuries. Other Saudi airports and facilities belonging to Saudi Aramco were also targeted, drawing criticism from the council. Members extended their condolences to the victims’ families and called on the Houthis to immediately halt their military escalation and attacks against civilian targets.
Furthermore, the Security Council underscored the importance of fully implementing Resolution 2216, adopted in 2015, and subsequent resolutions aimed at resolving the conflict in Yemen. The council called for enhanced international cooperation, including with Yemen’s internationally recognized government, to prevent weapons, military equipment, funding, training, and technical assistance from reaching the Houthis.
In addition to condemning the attacks, the Security Council highlighted the importance of protecting commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, emphasizing the need to safeguard vessels, their crews, and international maritime navigation from Houthi threats. The council also reiterated its support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government and the country’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Additionally, the Security Council reaffirmed its backing for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg and diplomatic efforts to achieve a comprehensive political settlement in Yemen. This support reflects ongoing international efforts to bring about peace and stability in the region amidst ongoing conflicts.
