A dermatologist is calling on companies to educate their workforce about the skin risks associated with these essential communication tools.

The issue is a matter of occupational health. A skin expert explains that for many employees, wearing a headset for 6-8 hours a day is a job requirement. This prolonged use is a direct cause of acne mechanica, contact dermatitis, and skin infections. These conditions can be uncomfortable, distracting, and can even lead to employees taking time off work.

This is particularly relevant in call centers and open-plan offices where headsets are ubiquitous. The dermatologist points out that if headsets are shared—a common but unhygienic practice—the risk of spreading bacterial infections like staph or even lice is significantly increased. This poses a health risk to the entire team.

Companies can play a proactive role in prevention. The expert suggests that wellness programs should include simple guidelines on device hygiene. This could involve providing employees with alcohol wipes at their desks and reminding them to clean their headsets daily. For new employees, this information should be part of their onboarding.
